Top 10 Favorites In Oakland/Berkeley Area

I’m a San Francisco girl, but after being with my partner for a couple of years (who lives near Oakland), I’ve really learned to love the area, especially it’s food scene! Oakland’s food scene is booming and it’s impossible to try every place on my list because the list just keeps growing. Here are my current top 10 favorite places I keep finding myself going back to.

Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks

2521 Durant Ave, Ste E

Berkeley, CA 9704

Anything that involves fried chicken, I’m there. Shihlin carries a piece of fried chicken that’s larger than my face, and that’s large! 😂 It’s crispy, salty, and slightly spicy – brings me back to delicious memories walking around Asia checking out all the street food options. What’s best about this chicken is you can order either white meat or dark meat!

Banh Mi Ba Le
1909 International Blvd.
Oakland, CA

So many options of sandwiches here! I love Ba La for their perfectly balanced sandwiches with pickled veggies and the different options of meat between light, airy, but crispy bread. My favorites are the combination pork and fish cake sandwiches with the occasional Vietnamese iced coffee.

2200 Oxford St.
Berkeley, CA 94704

Gather makes me wish I was a student attending UC Berkeley so that I could cut class for brunch. Their breakfast pizza is worth the visit. It’s covered with bacon and caramelized onions, and topped with a perfect runny egg. Feeling even more extravagant? Order a burger for breakfast. It’s so simple, yet tasty! A couple of pickles are thrown into each burger, which cuts the richness of the meat and cheese. And let me just say… the fries that come with the burger are absolutely delicious.

Agave Uptown
2135 Franklin St.
Oakland, CA 94612

One of my new favorite eateries in Oakland! Their guacamole is so simple, but so tasty. I can’t dine here without starting off with an order of their guac. They also have tlayuda, an Oaxacan pizza, a tasty housemade crispy corn tortilla covered in a thin layer or smashed black beans, your choice of protein, and all the fixings.

2566B Telegraph Ave
Berkeley, CA 94704

Kiraku has a special place in my ❤. My boyfriend and I had our first date here; it was so delicious we got hooked and continue to come here when we feel like having a special meal. Their omakase is always a hit with very fresh fish and their corn fritters are a popular item if you’re feeling like having a crispy fried treat. Their menu consists of small plates ranging from skewers of grilled meats to stir fry udon. We try to order something different during each visit and we haven’t found a dish we didn’t like.

Cheese Board Pizza
1512 Shattuck Ave
Berkeley, CA 94709

First of all, I LOVE PIZZA. Cheese Board Pizza’s never have meat, but they’re still tasty and put me in a happy place everytime I take a bite. It’s the one pizza I constantly crave and I find myself looking at their website about once a month to see what pizzas are being served for that week. The pizzas consist of a sourdough crust that’s chewy and always has a nice drizzle of some tasty olive oil. Don’t forget to dip your pizza into their special green sauce!

Vien Huong

712 Franklin St.

Oakland, CA 94607

Whenever I’m feeling under the weather, you can find me at Vien Huong. They serve a variety of rice plates and fried noodles, but what they’re really known for are their noodle soups. You can completely customize your bowl by choosing your preferred noodle and whether you want your soup on the side or with your noodles. A bowl of hot noodle soup from here definitely hits the spot.

Tao Yuen Pastry

816 Franklin St.

Oakland, CA 94607

Located in Oakland’s Chinatown is my go-to spot for when I’m just too lazy to cook. I’m tired, I’m starving and I just want something cheap and quick. You can get dim sum or their already prepared items for a more filling meal. I usually get a couple of the fried shrimp dumplings (my fave) and a small container of chow mein for about five bucks. Can’t beat it. Tao Yuen just always has my back.

Daughter Thai Kitchen

6118 Medau Pl

Oakland, CA 94611

I don’t know what it is about Daughter Thai Kitchen, but I just love this place! Maybe it’s the atmosphere, maybe it’s the pretty decor, but one thing for certain is I love their food. I specifically love the yellow curry and their version of fried chicken. The fried chicken is a flattened piece of white meat with a fluffy beer batter-like crust. It’s served with a piece of roti and yellow curry sauce. It’s just wonderful. Don’t forget to try their desserts too! The coconut ice cream served in a coconut is amazing.
